About
j.ello | report

Pleased to meet you, hope you guessed my name... but what's puzzling you is the nature of my game.

Welp, you wanted a picture of the j.ellomeister, so here's a poor resolution, poorly lit picture that makes me look better than I really do. :)  Next to me is the real brains of the operation, Zed, upon which most reports are written.
The point of j.ello | report isn't really to bring you shareware and freeware, fonts and all that stuff.  Sure, that stuff is great... but if you don't have a firm grasp of how or why to use it, what's the point?  Until recently, computing and the Internet has been the soul domain of the geek... and geeks don't need much help.  However, geeks are now a minority on the Internet... replaced by what I like to call the "casual user"... who thinks computers are cool, are willing to explore, but just don't have the history to know why things are the way they are.  Once you understand how things developed the way they have, and the basic understanding of how things work in that mysterious buzzing box...  then everything simply becomes clear and you will get more from your computer.  That's where I come in.
I started writing j.ello | report because all too many information sources out there give no background, no reason for the weird complexities of your machine, and no justification for why things are they are.  With each new territory I have learned about in computers, I have found tons of resources out there catering to those who already understand the concepts... but almost none give you a primer in case you're a newbie -- the best you can hope for in most cases is a poorly written "frequently asked questions", which is the geek's way of saying they don't have time to bother with your silly questions, even though they at one time asked them too.
Here you don't just get a how-to, or a lookie-what-I-can-do... you get an explanation of how it's done, why it's done that particular way, and how it effects you.  After you've got the basics, you'll be able to hook up with those ultra-geeky sites and understand what they're trying to say!  Knowing what's available, how it works and why it's useful is what I'm all about.

About j.ello

j.ello is my name!  Jeffrey J. Ello to be exact... a bitter-sweet curse shared by me and my brother, Joseph J... and a couple other unrelated, but equally cursed Ello's around the country.  I am 30, I live in an apartment, which by the way is where this web-site you are reading is located.   I was born in Waukegan, IL... grew up in Chesterton, IN... and now I am the IT Manager for the Krannert School of Management at Purdue University, in West Lafayette, IN.  I run the servers and build the operating methods and services for our network of roughly 7200 users and 700 machines... at the same time I provide technical services and troubleshooting, training and advice to my users.  I have been building and running networks in this manner for 14 years... yep, you got that right, since I was 15.  It has always been my "fallback job".
My real talents lie in graphics, 3d animation and Videography, and even Mechanical Engineering.  While that may seem like a weird spread of talents... trust me... they all feed off the same problem-solving attitude that makes me a reasonably good systems administrator.  In case you're wondering where my sights lie... they lie in making Movies, independent, or perhaps for a studio... ya know, George Lucas style... "always two there are, that which you want, and that which you get."
SO why am I STILL in Lafayette, IN?  Working on that dream.  In the industry, unless you floor them with talent, it's "who you know", and I don't know anyone. :)
What if it doesn't work out?  Well, I've always got system administration, tech support... or any number of graphics jobs out there.  I don't care where I am as long as I have the freedom to create things... that's what I do best.

I'll keep you filled in on the pursuits as time goes on.

'nuff about me... the rest is classified. :)
