I was watching "Who wants to be a Millionaire?" tonight... and for those who missed it, a fairly smart fellow had made it to the $500,000 level... being pretty much a smug little jerk to Regis.  Not that Regis doesn't deserve it... but the first rule of television is never dog the host... it's just bad form.  BUT, the guy completely redeemed himself in my eyes.  The last question, for a million bucks was "Which president appeared on Laugh In?"  Looking as though they had finally stumped Mr. Brainiac, he asked to use a life-line to call his dad.  When his father answered, the guy told him, "Actually, I don't need your help, I just wanted to call and tell you that I'm going to win a million dollars."  and proceeded to answer the question.  That takes balls of lead... and I respect that.

Which brings me to something that you can win.  I appreciate all of my readers and I wanted to do something for you as we go into the new millennium.  Most of you are subscribers, but there is a rather large contingent who read the report daily through the web site or even through the program Comics 2.1, which now features the ability to download the most recent report. :)  I appreciate all of you... so, while I put the details together on Subscription Contest #3... I want to have a little contest for which you don't need to do anything but take a guess.
I guess I'll call it the j.ellennium contest.  All you need to do is guess how many j.ello subscribers there will be at midnight, January 1, 2000.  The person closest to the right number wins an Intellimouse Explorer.  No one is sponsoring this one, it's just my way of saying thanks for being here, reading, and helping the list grow.  Every reader can play, whether you're subscribed or not... because ALL the readers are important.  It's your continued support and recommendations that have made the difference.
I can't give you much in the line of a hint, BUT... the report has been going since May...  there are more than 5,000 and less than 50,000.  So keep it in that range.  Go to the j.ellennium contest page to make a guess! :)

Microsoft judge appoints mediator - The future of Microsoft could now lay in the hands of a federal Appeals Court judge in Chicago. In an unprecedented move Friday, Judge Richard Posner was appointed to act as a mediator to try to reach a settlement between the government and Microsoft over alleged antitrust violations.

Wireless networking goes high-speed - In among all the shiny new objects proudly displayed on the floors of the Las Vegas and the Sands Convention Centers, there was something that caught my eye. The technology behind these devices has been around for awhile, but it was the first time that I saw that technology being marketed for use with the latest high-speed Internet delivery systems.

FCC orders local telecom firms to share lines with data carriers - In a landmark decision for Web users, the Federal Communications Commission gave a big boost to high-speed Internet connections Thursday by voting to require major local phone companies to share their lines with data carriers.

A classic mailing list... which I have neglected to mention until now.  This is True is a weekly syndicated column by Randy Cassingham.  He brings bizarre tales to light... and they're all true. :)  His writing reminds me of Paul Harvey in many ways... well... that is... if Paul Harvey ever talked about people who are still alive. :)

While still a beta product, I think this is already one of the better renaming utilities I have seen.  Very fast, with options that most renamers just don't have.
