Valentine's Day is just around the corner and you, of course, haven't even thought of something sweet for your sugar. Well... let the ole' j.ellster give you one idea that makes sense. If you've got a CD-R, or CD-RW... you can always burn a CD of love songs. Of course, most of us don't have a good archive of just the right kinds of songs... so enter CDNOW.com. I don't buy many CD's anymore, mostly because there are so few albums one can listen to all the way through. Heck, due to the advent of .mp3, or more importantly .vqf (a much better sounding format), I haven't used my CD's in years. How many CD's out there are really worth buying? Sure, you can make it all the way through Alanis, Tonic, Pink Floyd and a few others... but how many Counting Crows songs can you really take before you realize every single one is about being a drunk or a bum in some delusional state... claiming to be a king? I really don't like individual bands or artists... I just like good songs. That's why if I had something like CDNOW when I was a kid... my entire archive of music would be custom compilations of only the stuff worth buying a CD for. CDNOW allows you to construct a CD of just the songs you want, from their archive (which isn't huge at the moment, but it's getting better). Any 12 songs for $19.95, they burn it for you and send you the CD. Now, $19.95 may seem expensive, but if you think about it, would ya rather have 12 songs you love for $19.95, or 2 you love and 10 you can't stand for the cost of a normal, store bought CD at $12. On the horizon, there are experimental kiosks in a couple stores around the US where you can punch in the songs you want, and the machine burns the final music CD while you wait... but it's gonna be a while before that's commonplace... plus the quality isn't very hot yet, as the songs are stored in the machine as fairly low quality .MP3's. When you burn them to a disc, you still only have .MP3 quality, so there are the usual artifacts and hisses in the higher frequencies. But hey, ya got to admit, it's getting better. But back to Valentine's Day, CDNOW's website has a decent selection of love songs to compile for your honey. Trust me... custom music CD's from your heart... it'll keep you out of the dog house for days. ;) http://www.cdnow.com
