Software Submissions
Good software
is hard to find, and here at the j.ello | report we're particularly anal
about finding and showing the best that money, or better yet, no money can
buy.
SUBMITTERS - Read the following very carefully to assess which category
your software falls within. If your Freeware or Shareware doesn't fall
into the exact guidelines below... then it's not. *IMPORTANT NOTE* Bannerware, Spyware, Signupware... regardless
what you call it, regardless what the catch is... it is not Freeware.
FREEWARE - To be listed as "Freeware", the only restrictions on the
software must be the standard copyright and distribution policies. The
software cannot install secondary services, hidden processes, or make any
changes to the user's settings which benefit the Author.
SHAREWARE - "Shareware", likewise, can only be listed if the program is
void of advertisements, collection of data, or any strings OTHER than
the free usage of the product's defined uses for a period of time, followed by
the purchase of the product. As with freeware, there can be no system
changes which provide a commercial advantage to the Author.
DEMO/LIGHTWARE fall under the same rule as shareware, except
the term applies to either limited or crippled versions of the software. Any
software that does not allow complete usage of all components prior to
purchase or registration is not Shareware or Freeware.
BANNERWARE/SPYWARE/ETC. - "Bannerware" covers every other
possibility, commercialized Freeware and/or Shareware whose banner components
are disabled through registration or purchase. Regardless
what the requirements are for the use of your software, even if there is no
fee for its use... If it doesn't
solely involve the trade of cash for the unfettered use of the product, or if
it includes any function which collects or sends information from the user's
machine to any external location, installs secondary software or icons,
changes home pages,
or any other program manipulation for the commercial or private benefit of the Author...
then it is considered Bannerware. To be listed in the report, It must be 100%
uninstallable, especially the commercial components, through the Windows
uninstaller or supplied uninstaller. All commercial or data collection
functions must be noted in the EULA and must allow the user to cancel the
installation if they don't agree with the software's commercial functions. We will report misrepresented
Freeware or Shareware to other download centers in the hopes that we can help
clean up these abuses.
Bannerware can be a good thing... and we're more than happy to show superior
bannerware, so long as its author's are honest and complete in their
description of its effects on user's machines. Simple as that.
P.S. -- at the j.ello | report, we periodically run subscription
contests... and one of the things we LOVE to give away is great
software! If you're software is appealing to the wider j.ello
audience, and you can spare some licenses, we'd love to have you. It
brings more readers to the report, and gives you some great advertising.
If interested, just contact jello@jello.net.
